Steelcase Picks Puchong For Global Service Center
Steelcase Inc, an office furniture maker and designer from the U.S., has chosen Malaysia as its first Global Shared Services (GSS) center, local media reported on Saturday. The multi-million dollar center in Kuala Lumpur is one of Steelcase's largest investments in Asia Pacific, company executives said. GSS-KL will serve Steelcase's offices and customers globally through the centralization of resources including its data and innovation centers as well as finance, information technology (IT), administration and sales communications services. Malaysia's centralized location within Asia, along with its good IT and telecommunication infrastructure were major factors for the selection, Steelcase president and chief executive officer Jim Hackett said. The availability of a deep pool of talented, skilled workers with strong English capabilities was crucial too, Hackett said at the opening of GSS-KL on Friday. The center will employ 140 people initially, with another 100 expected to be added in the near future, the New Straits Times reported. Steelcase, founded in 1912, has a fiscal 2008 revenue of 3.5 billion U.S. dollars and manufacturing facilities in 35 locations worldwide including one in Malaysia. The Malaysian factory in Puchong, central Selangor state, is one of the company's three major facilities. The other two are in Kyoto, Japan and Shenzhen, China. The bulk of the Puchong factory's output is shipped to markets in Asia Pacific, Hackett said. Steelcase's business in Asia Pacific has grown faster than anywhere else in the world, he said, adding that some 35 percent of its sales are generated outside the U.S. The share for office furniture market in Asia, Hackett said, is fragmented as there are more than 2,000 manufacturers competing in the region.

Offerings for the Modern Mixed Community
With its well thought-out facilities and great location, Taman Damai Utama’s integrated offerings make an attractive home and business hub for the modern community.
Fresh from the success of its D’Eleganza homes in Cheras, developer Medan Damai Sdn Bhd scores again with Taman Damai Utama in Puchong Kinrara. Launched in stages from last year, this 99-year leasehold mixed development will contain approximately 3,800 units of residential and commercial properties upon completion.
The hallmark offerings of this 830-acre, RM230 million development are the U’Senesis terrace homes and U’Center Point shop offices, geared towards the need of contemporary home-owners, families and business residents. Proposed future launches consist of two- and 2½-storey terrace houses; low-cost, mid-low cost and medium-cost apartments; semi-detached homes and bungalow houses.

U’Senesis offers 80 beautiful 2½-storey terrace homes, after completely selling out its two-storey homes. U’Senesis homes feature a column–free frontage allowing two cars to park side by side, homogeneous tiles in the car porch and a five-ft wall with M.S. railing fencing. The interior features full-height wall tiling in the kitchen and bathroom, as well as dedicated air-conditioner compressor spaces to avoid distracting from the stylish contemporary façade. The master bathroom comes with a shower screen and vanity top, with water-heater points and air-conditioner points in the bedrooms. Launched in November 2007, U’Senesis is scheduled for completion in November this year.

Link Road Finally Opens
The missing link between Puchong Hartamas and Bandar Puteri Puchong has been opened to motorists after a delay of four months.
The 300m link, initiated by the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) to connect the two residential areas, was to be opened in June. It was delayed because of to several reasons, including technical.
“Now that the road is open, motorists can have shorter access to the main road, especially the Lebuhraya Damansara Puchong (LDP).
“It also provides an easier access to residents from Puchong Hartamas and Bandar Puteri Puchong,” said Kinrara assemblyman Teresa Kok during the road’s official opening on Saturday.
Present at the event were Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo and MPSJ president Datuk Adnan Mohd Ikhsan.
Teresa said the road provided an alternative for motorists plying the area and hoped it would reduce the congestion.
Also, Teresa said the authority was doing its best to ensure residents had the road access they wanted, including missing links in their areas.
She said there were several areas left unconnected due to various reasons.
“One of the main reasons is that the parties involved can’t seem to reach an agreement on the construction of the links.
“Sometimes, it involves developers of the affected developments and neighbouring local authorities, which makes the matter complicated,” she said.
She urged residents affected by the situation to continue putting pressure on authorities to push for projects.
“Everyone has to put in a concerted effort to get the projects going,” she said.

New Highway In The Pipeline
The Government is studying a proposal for an alternative highway to the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP), which has now reached full traffic capacity.
Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said traffic congestion at certain places along the highway such as the Sunway and the Sg Penchala tolls was “now at a very bad stage.”
“The traffic jam at these two tolls are categorised at Level E, which means it is very bad. The proposal for an alternative highway was submitted by Projek Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan. The proposal is being studied by the Economic Planning Unit,” said Zin.
“This alternative highway will give road users more choices and help to reduce congestion along the LDP. That highway has a traffic capacity of 120,000 cars each day.
“In many places, the current traffic volume is up to the brim,” he told reporters after opening the Sepang Pemuda, Wanita and Puteri Umno meetings in Sepang yesterday.
Zin said he had also directed the Malaysian Highway Authority to study the feasibility of such an alternative highway.
“Opening an alternative highway to the LDP will also benefit the hundreds of thousands of people living in residential areas along the highway.
“At the same time, I would also recommend that the LDP concessionaire put more efforts into enhancing its infrastructure and develop ways to reduce congestion,” he said.
However, Zin declined to state the alignment of the highway, adding that details were still being worked out.
In May, the minister had told Dewan Rakyat that the Government was looking into having peak and off-peak toll rates as one of the three options to solve the congestion problem of LDP.
Zin had said then that having lower toll rates for using the highway during off-peak hours would encourage road users to stagger their journeys and thus, reduce traffic jams.
Subsidies for the LDP have cost the Government RM630.54mil since 1999 €” the year the LDP toll rates were reduced from RM1.50 set in the concessionaire agreement to RM1.
On another matter, Zin said the Cabinet had directed the ministry to ensure that all construction projects under the Public Works Department continued according to schedule despite the current global economic crisis.
“Until today, we have not received any report of abandoned construction. However, I have set up a taskforce to monitor the situation. The department has some RM70bil worth of projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, which are capable of spinning more economic development in the country,” he said.

7 Temples Awaiting Land Titles To Relocate
Awtar Singh, special assistant to Seri Serdang assemblyman Datuk Dr Mohd Satim Diman, highlighted the plight of the Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist temples recently.
He pointed out that these temples had already settled the planning issues with the local council, and were waiting for the state government and Land Office to issue them the land titles.
The temples are Persatuan Penganut Devi Arulmigu Sri Nagakali Jai Muniswarar in Puchong Hartamas, Kuil Aum Sri Maha Aathi Nageswary Amman in Puchong Gateway, Persatuan Pengurusan Kuil Maha Mariamman in Taman Perindustrian Pusat Bandar Puchong, Kuil Naga Nagawasrya Amman in Taman Puchong Intan, Kuil Aaudayar Muniswarar Alayam in Bandar Puteri Puchong, Persatuan Penganut Agama Sikh in Batu 14 Puchong and Persatuan Penganut Agama Buddha in Bandar Puteri Puchong.
“These temples have been given land to relocate and some have already had the structures put up by the developers.
“The land has been endorsed in the One-Stop Centre in the Subang Jaya Municipal Council and the district officer was supposed to submit papers to the state government for approval.
“Once approved, the temples will have to submit applications for the land titles.
“But the district officer hasn’t done his part yet,” Awtar said.
He said he has spoken to Selangor health, plantation workers and caring government committee chairman Dr Xavier Jeyakumar, who is also in the three-man committee on non-Muslim religious affairs, about three months ago but no action had been taken so far.
“I urge him to call for a meeting at the Land Office to hear the problems of these temples. The Land Office can get the paper work done immediately to send to the Selangor exco for approval,” he said.
